WHICH ISSUES CAN OSKAR HELP WITH?
Warmth is one of the oldest home remedies. It does not only help against cold feet and to warm the bed before going to sleep, but also when it comes to menstrual cramps, bladder infections, tensions, neck and back pains, stomach ache, obstipation, diarrhoea, nervousness and sleep disturbances.
WHY DOES THE WARMTH EMITTED BY OSKAR HELP?
The blood plasma is responsible for the distribution of warmth within our circulatory system. Ifwe put a hot-water bottle onto our belly, the blood vessels will enlarge due to the warmth. This leads to an enhanced skin blood circulation. Due to the enlarged blood vessels the blood flows more slowly. The cells are better provided with oxygen and nutrients. Metabolic waste products like carbon dioxide are transported faster by the blood back to the lungs and other waste products are expelled at a higher speed too. The muscle tension decreases and the muscles relax. The inner organs are also indirectly provided with warmth via the nervous system.
Apart from that, the British physiologist Brian King (University College London) found out due to experiments with rats, that warmth can outrightly block pain. If the skin next to a location of pain is warmed to more than 40 degrees Celsius, certain pain receptors are activated within the body. These receptors block the sensors for pain, which results in the rats not noticing the pain any longer. The lead researchers assume that there is a similar mechanism with the human body.
COULD OSKAR THE COZY HOT-WATER BOTTLE HAVE NEGATIVE EFFECTS?
Yes, because if the skin is heated up too much and too long, redness and (after several hours) inflammations might be caused. If used too often, a netlike redness of the skin called erythema ab igne (a thermally caused skin disease) might be caused. If it is an acute case, the redness might last for several hours but it usually resolves itself without any complications and the person remains pain free. If the warmth is applied for too long, however, the redness can become permanent. It is extremely important to be careful when it comes to children and babies. Infants that are six months old or younger can already suffer from severe burns or scalds after having lain on a hot-water bottle filled with water at the temperature of 45 degrees Celsius for an hour. Apart from that, you should not fill the hot-water bottle with boiling water anyway. Water vapours might develop and the resulting pressure might lead to the bursting of the bottle.
HOW HOT SHOULD OSKAR THE COZY HOT-WATER BOTTLE BE?
By no means too hot! For adults a maximum temperature of 60 degrees Celsius is sufficient. You can approximately reach this temperature by filling the hot-water bottle half with cold and half with boiling water. If in doubt, use more cold water.
⚠️ For children a temperature of 40 degrees celsius should not be exceeded.
HOW TO CORRECTLY USE OSKAR – THE ONE AND ONLY
Various errors may occur during use. Therefore we have summarized the most important tips of how to use Oskar the cozy hot-water bottle in a correct way.
TIP 1Check the condition of the hot-water bottle. Before filling the hot-water bottle you should check if the bottle shows any sign of damage. If the material is brittle or shows any other signs of wear, you should not continue using the hot-water bottle.
TIP 2 Never fill with boiling water. Do not use boiling water for the hot-water bottle. If water boils, water vapour is the result. The vapour will extend in the bottle, which might cause the bottle to burst. Severe burns can be the consequence.
TIP 3 Do not over.fill the hot-water bottle. To be on the safe side, you should never fill the hot-water bottle to the brim. Do only fill up to two thirds of the maximum capacity of the bottle. This ensures that water vapour can expand without causing any damage.
TIP 4 Mind the temperature of the water. For adults it is possible to use water heated up to a maximum of 60 degrees Celsius. For children a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius should not be exceeded. To reach the desired temperature, you can use an electric kettle. You can also let boiling water cool down while using a thermometer to check the temperature before filling the hot-water bottle.
TIP 5 Avoid direct contact with your skin. Never place the hot-water bottle directly onto the skin without using any protection. This can lead to severe burns. There are protective covers for hot-water bottles that you should use. If you do not own a cover, you can alternatively use a towel. However, this is not entirely safe, as a towel can move and thus the hot-water bottle might get exposed. Use Oskar the hot water bottle with the included protective cover.
TIP 6 Check if the hot-water bottle is corrEctly closed. Hold the filled and closed hot-water bottle above the sink and turn it upside down. Like this you can check if the bottle is closed correctly and that no water is escaping.
TIP 7 Use rubber gloves to fill the hot-waterbottle. You sometimes underestimate the amount of water that is already in the bottle. It can happen very easily, the water spills and your fingers get burned. Use rubber gloves to protect yourself from burns.
